Alamance County Leaders Announce New Distribution Center

MEBANE, April 15, 2011 - A ceremony is planned for Tuesday, April 19 at 2:00 P.M. to celebrate the groundbreaking of a new operations and distribution center in Mebane’s North Carolina Industrial Center (NCIC).  The facility is a collaboration between Kidde Residential & Commercial (the leading manufacturer of residential fire safety products), New Breed Logistics and Samet Corporation.  Kidde is a business of UTC Fire & Security, a unit of United Technologies Corp. (NYSE: UTX).

Located across the street from Kidde’s business headquarters, the state-of-the-art 244,000 square foot facility will consolidate Kidde’s warehousing and distribution, which will enable the company to streamline its packaging and shipping operations.

“Kidde was one of the first tenants located at NCIC, and has played an important role in our county for decades.  I’m thrilled that this latest expansion will also be at NCIC,” said Mac Williams, president of the Alamance County Area Chamber of Commerce.

“Kidde’s headquarters has been located in Mebane for nearly 40 years.  Hopefully the community will view this new facility as a sign of our commitment to continuing to be a part of Alamance County,” said Jim Ward, general manager of Kidde.

Samet Corporation, based in Greensboro, will lease and oversee the construction of the new building.

“North Carolina Industrial Center has been proven as a strategic business location for many of the Triad’s top companies,” said Brian Hall, Real Estate Preconstruction Project Manager for Samet. “Kidde is no exception.  We began our relationship with Kidde over 6 years ago when they initially located inside the first spec building at NCIC.  They continue to be one of our most important clients and we couldn’t be more excited about their growth inside the park.”

Kidde has contracted with High Point based New Breed Logistics to manage and operate the new distribution center.  In addition to providing fulfillment services for Kidde’s retail, distributor and manufacturing customers, New Breed will also design and implement a new packaging operation―a function previously performed at Kidde’s manufacturing facilities.  New Breed aims to add 50-60 employees to support the packaging operation.

“New Breed’s ability to deliver innovative process and technology solutions will greatly contribute to Kidde’s strategic supply chain initiatives,” said Joe Hauck, Vice President of Sales, Marketing & Communications, New Breed Logistics.  “We value the partnerships we have built with other United Technologies business units, including Sikorsky Aircraft, Hamilton Sundstrand and Pratt & Whitney, and look forward to delivering exemplary service to their Kidde operations.”

The facility is expected to be completed by the end of 2011.
